For most ophthalmic procedures, local anesthesia (drops/injection) is sufficient — it’s comfortable, controlled, and safe. If the patient is anxious or the surgery takes longer, sedation is used: you stay relaxed, calm, and remember little about the procedure while breathing and heartbeat are monitored by the anesthesiologist. General anesthesia is applied when medically indicated or upon patient request during complex surgeries. Sedation is a light ‘medical sleep’ with independent breathing and continuous monitoring; general anesthesia is a deeper state where the anesthesiologist controls everything. The choice depends on the procedure and your health condition.
