Preparing for strabismus surgery

Before surgery, you must undergo a full ophthalmological examination. It is recommended to bring previous medical records and reports of any earlier surgical procedures to your doctor’s appointment. Before any potential surgery, your doctor will treat and correct any existing eye conditions and may refer you to other medical specialists for additional tests.

Once the necessary preparation period is complete, you and your doctor will create an individual and comfortable treatment plan, undergo preoperative tests, and schedule the date of surgery. During the preoperative consultation with the anesthesiologist, the most suitable method of anesthesia will be chosen and the details of preoperative preparation will be discussed.

After surgery, your eye may be covered with a bandage. The bandage remains on the eye until the follow-up examination the next day. You will arrange the time of this check-up with the operating nurse.

The next day, you will come to the 'German Eye Clinic' for your first follow-up examination at the scheduled time. You will be accompanied to the surgical department, where the surgeon will assess the condition of your eye and schedule the next follow-up visit.

After surgery, it is necessary to follow these rules:

1. Postoperative eye protection: for the first 3 weeks, do not touch your eyes (no scratching, rubbing, or pressing). Indoors, you may be without a bandage or sunglasses; for one month after surgery, you must wear sunglasses outdoors in any weather.
2. Personal hygiene: during the first week after surgery, avoid washing your head and face to prevent soap from entering the operated eye. You may take a shower immediately, but only up to chin level. Visiting baths, saunas, swimming pools, or open water is prohibited for one month after surgery.
3. Physical activity restrictions: for one month after surgery, avoid prolonged bending of your body and head (such as washing floors without a mop, hand washing clothes, or gardening), strength or contact sports, and lifting objects heavier than 10 kg for men and 5 kg for women.

After completing the treatment, you will receive a discharge summary containing the treatment duration, name of the operation, results of control examinations, and postoperative treatment recommendations, including the duration of temporary disability if applicable.
