Symptoms and Causes

If you have myopia, distant objects appear blurry. You may find that squinting makes the image clearer. For example, nearsighted students can easily read books and see their neighbors sitting nearby, but teachers and, more importantly, words on the board would appear blurred. Myopia occurs when the light rays entering the eye refract too strongly and converge at a point before reaching the retina. The eyeball may be longer than normal or the cornea too curved. As a result, the images you see are not properly focused on the retina.

Myopia usually develops in childhood and is often first noticed when parents see that their child has trouble reading the board at school. It tends to progress during adolescence and stabilizes in adulthood. Some experts believe myopia is hereditary. It may or may not be accompanied by astigmatism.
