  • A Good Choice — Eye Massage

Working a lot, we often tire not only our muscles but also our eyes. And when we feel fatigue, our hands seem to reach for our eyes on their own — to rub them or give them a light massage. Folk medicine recommends regular eye massage. It is a simple, effective, and easily accessible method that helps prevent visual fatigue.

Ancient Chinese doctors advised performing special rubbing techniques for the prevention of eye fatigue and weakened vision. They believed that there is a certain connection between the eyes, kidneys, and liver. The Chinese also believed that not only internal organs affect the eyes, but that the eyes also influence internal organs.

If every morning, while washing your face, you regularly rub your forehead, actively raise your eyebrows several times, and blink, blood circulation in the eye area will improve, your gaze will become clearer, and you will feel more energized.

An effective eye massage not only relieves tension in the eye muscles but also has therapeutic and preventive effects, so it can be used to help prevent glaucoma and cataracts.

People have understood how beneficial a good eye massage is during long hours of computer work. So, before starting the massage, remove your glasses and lenses. Perform the exercises with relaxed facial muscles and lowered eyelids. The massage can be used by both adults and children, repeating it several times a day.

Massage for Preventing Visual Fatigue

Gentle Eyelid Stroking

Close your eyes and, with your fingertips, gently stroke the upper eyelids from the nose toward the outer corners of the eyes, and the lower eyelids — toward the nose. Duration: 30–35 seconds.

Blinking Exercise

Blink quickly for 15–20 seconds, then sit with your eyes closed for 1–3 minutes. Repeat the exercise several times.

Vibrational Eye Relaxation

If you experience emotional tension and severe eye fatigue, gently press your fingers onto your closed eyes with slight continuous vibration 5–10 times for 7–8 seconds. This will help relieve tension, reduce eyelid swelling, improve visual acuity, and eliminate headaches.

Eye Compresses After Massage

You can finish the eye massage with eye compresses made from chamomile, calendula, birch leaves, freshly brewed green tea, or parsley decoction. To prepare the infusion, pour a glass of boiling water over one tablespoon of crushed flowers, herbs, or leaves, and let it sit in a thermos for 20–30 minutes. Then strain it, soak small pieces of gauze or fabric in the warm infusion, and apply them to your eyelids for 10–15 minutes. The compresses can be repeated daily.
